A slow computer is one of the most common reasons people in Murrieta, Temecula and nearby cities reach out to us. It takes forever to start, programs freeze, and simple tasks like opening email feel like a chore.
The good news is that some slowdowns have simple causes you can check yourself. Others are a sign of a deeper problem, like a failing hard drive or malware, that needs a professional. Here’s how to tell the difference.
It sounds too simple, but many people put their computer to sleep for weeks at a time. A full restart clears memory, finishes pending updates, and stops stuck background processes. On Windows, choose Restart rather than Shut down, since a full restart clears more.
Lots of programs set themselves to launch every time you log in. Over time, that adds up.
Don’t disable your antivirus or anything you don’t recognize without looking it up first.
In Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac), sort by CPU, memory and disk. If one program is constantly near the top, that’s often your culprit. Web browsers with dozens of open tabs are a frequent offender.
When your main drive is nearly full, your computer has less room for temporary files and updates, and it can slow down noticeably. Empty the recycle bin, uninstall programs you don’t use, and move large photo and video files to an external drive or cloud storage. On Windows, the built-in Storage Sense tool can help clean up temporary files.
Operating system and driver updates often include performance and security fixes. Run Windows Update or macOS Software Update, and update your browser too.
Pop-ups, a browser homepage that changed on its own, new toolbars, or a computer that’s suddenly sluggish can all be signs of malware. Run a full scan with your security software. If you see warnings demanding payment or a phone call to “tech support,” don’t call the number, and don’t give anyone remote access. That’s a common scam.
If the computer is fine but the internet feels slow, look at your browser. Remove extensions you don’t recognize or use, clear your cache, and close tabs you don’t need. Also test another device on the same Wi-Fi: if everything is slow, the problem may be your internet connection or router rather than the computer.
Laptops and desktops slow themselves down when they overheat. If the fan is constantly loud or the bottom of your laptop is hot, dust may be blocking airflow. Use it on a hard, flat surface, not a bed or couch. Opening a computer to clean it is best left to a technician if you’re not comfortable doing it.
This is the one not to ignore. Warning signs include:
If you notice these, back up your important files right away, then have the drive checked. Older computers with traditional spinning hard drives often get a big speed boost from an upgrade to a solid-state drive (SSD).

How much does it cost to fix a slow computer?
It depends on the cause. A software cleanup is different from a hardware upgrade or data recovery. Call us and we’ll give you a quote for your situation.
Is it worth fixing an old computer, or should I replace it?
Often an SSD or memory upgrade gives an older computer a lot more life. If the hardware is very old or the repair costs approach the price of a new machine, we’ll tell you honestly.
Can a virus make my computer slow?
Yes. Malware can use your computer’s resources in the background. A full scan is a good first step, and we can help with cleanup if it’s stubborn.
